Gift bows

Making bows out of magazines

(From the blog How About Orange)

Make nine strips of paper out of a magazine page. Try to use a page that has all colour on it. The strips should be 3/4 of an inch wide. Leave 3 of the strips full length, cut one inch off of the next three strips, two inches off of two strips, and the final strip should be three inches long (3 + 3 + 2 +1).

Loop eight strips as shown above and secure with glue, holding on for a few seconds so the glue sets. Curl the smallest strip into a circle. Assemble all the pieces from largest to smallest. The first layer make a six point star, and the final layer is the circle in the middle.

Living statues

Last week all classes learned some vocabulary around emotions and used their faces and bodies to show their feelings. Students had a chance to act for an audience of four and for the whole class, by themselves and in a small group. This week, we will be exploring the concept of living statues and tableau. Students will learn the skills of holding a position, maintaining an expression, and using their bodies silently to express a "living" picture. Some examples below show us "living statues."

Waltzing

All classes are learning about 3/4 time and waltzes this week. Students are playing a variety of instruments along to different waltz songs, identifying whether or not a song is a waltz, and learning how to dance the waltz in partners. The following video shows some fancy footwork for dancing the waltz.

B/eat it

Writing lyrics is sometimes a difficult process. This week we will be re-writing lyrics to very familiar songs (such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) and maybe some of our favourite songs. We will try to perform the re-written song for our classmates. Then, as a class we will decide on a champion and have the whole class sing along to the new lyrics.

To help us think about this process, we have the karaoke version of "Beat It" by Michael Jackson, and the lyrics to "Eat It" by Weird Al Yankovic.

Eat It by Weird Al Yankovic

How come you're always such a fussy young man
Don't want no Captain Crunch, don't want no Raisin Bran
Well, don't you know that other kids are starving in Japan
So eat it, just eat it

Don't want to argue, I don't want to debate
Don't want to hear about what kind of food you hate
You won't get no dessert 'till you clean off your plate
So eat it, don't you tell me you're full

Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Get yourself an egg and beat it
Have some more chicken, have some more pie
It doesn't matter if it's boiled or fried

Just eat it, eat it,
just eat it, eat it
Just eat it, eat it,
just eat it, eat it, ooh

Your table manners are some cryin' shame
You're playin' with your food, this ain't some kind of game
Now, if you starve to death, you'll just have yourself to blame
So eat it, just eat it

You better listen, better do what you're told
You haven't even touched your tuna casserole
You better chow down or it's gonna get cold
So eat it, I don't care if you're full

Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Open up your mouth and feed it

Have some more yogurt, have some more spam
It doesn't matter if it's fresh or canned

Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Don't you make me repeat it
Have a banana, have a whole bunch
It doesn't matter what you had for lunch

Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
If it's gettin' cold, reheat it
Have a big dinner, have a light snack
If you don't like it, you can't send it back

Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Get yourself an egg and beat it (oh lord)

Have some more chicken, have some more pie
It doesn't matter if it's boiled or fried

Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Don't you make me repeat it (oh no)
Have a banana, have a whole bunch
It doesn't matter what you had for lunch

Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it

Human Beatboxing

This week we are learning about rhythm and beat boxing. What is beat boxing? It's using your mouth and voice to make sounds like a DJ. We will be learning to establish a steady beat (using rhythm sticks), add in bass rhythm (using hand drums), and effective syncopation (using castanets). We also will be using our voices and microphones to make beat boxing sounds. Boot city cat city!
